A couple of years ago, my grandfather willingly relinquished his driver’s license due to Alzheimer’s. Even though he gave it up voluntarily, it didn’t stop him from getting creative with ways of getting around town. One Saturday morning he decided to fire up the 1965 tractor to run to the store to get some groceries. He created a ‘trunk’ on the tractor to store his purchases. During his adventure he took the most populated street in the town that he lived in. He also went past the mall during the morning rush hour traffic.

For the most part the family would have never known about his adventure. Luckily someone on Monday recounted the story to me at work about a ‘crazy old man on his tractor stopping traffic on a Saturday’. When I asked my grandpa about it he confessed. I love that he recognized his illness prevented him from driving a car. Made my heart smile even more when my dad had to disconnect the battery cables from anything else that could be considered for transportation.
